Synopsis

It’s a Great Time to Be a Physician: Building a Healthcare System that Works is a call to action for physicians. It is a first-hand account of the changes being demanded of the US healthcare system and their implications for physicians. Eight trends are described that will create a better, more sustainable healthcare system for everyone—including physicians and other providers, patients and payers—and for our economy. The book draws on Dr. Jeffrey Weisz’s experience as the executive medical director of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, and on the experiences of physicians throughout the system who have led the region to national preeminence on many measures of healthcare quality and outcomes, and in fulfilling the mission of prevention and keeping people healthy. The book also highlights other innovative healthcare systems where physicians are leading the way to high-quality, patient-focused care, improved outcomes, and higher value. Weisz argues that the challenges facing healthcare provide a unique opportunity for physicians to shape the healthcare system of the future.

Reviews

Drawing from the experiences of high-performing health systems around the country, Dr. Weisz presents a compelling case for reforming health care delivery through shared leadership, aligned incentives, evidence-based medicine, and coordinated, patient-centered care. As important, he demonstrates why physicians must lead this reform for their patients and the American healthcare system.
Donald W. Fisher, PhD, AMGA President and CEO, Anceta LLC Chairman and CEO, Alexandria, VA

Dr. Jeffrey Weisz has written an important book whose time has come. Physicians throughout America would be well served to learn and emulate the concepts and processes used to develop the high quality coordinated systems at Kaiser Permanente Southern California. Dr. Weisz has shared innumerable best practice examples, many of which are adaptable to physicians’ practices and medical groups everywhere.

The doctors who understand and adopt the principles of accountable care, clinical teams, population health, quality metrics, transparency and the power of aligned incentives will become the future leaders of an improved US healthcare delivery system.

Physicians have the opportunity to lead and an obligation to develop a uniquely American system of patient centered, high quality and affordable care while preserving the professionalism and enthusiasm to improve patients’ lives that have always motivated doctors to be patient advocates and healers.

This book is a guide to the future and should be read by policy makers, physicians and healthcare executives everywhere.
Robert Margolis MD, Managing Partner & CEO, HealthCare Partners Medical Group, Torrance, CA

The transformation of healthcare delivery is underway, and physicians must lead, not just follow, this transformation. That’s the message in this exciting new book. Rooted in his vast leadership experience as head of Kaiser Permanente of Southern California, Dr. Jeffrey Weisz provides a clear view of the path forward. This book is a call to action for physician leaders to shape the future. It can be done, it must be done, and here are the tools to make it happen.
Ian Morrison, PhD, Author, Consultant and Healthcare Futurist, Menlo Park, CA

At his core, Dr. Jeffrey Weisz is a passionate advocate for his patients. He took this unbridled focus on doing the right thing for patients straight into his job running of the largest multi-specialty group practices in the country. This book describes how Dr. Weisz used this drive to inspire innovative approaches to his noble goal of optimizing the health of Kaiser Permanente members who entrusted their care to the Southern California region. In the process, he helped produce gains in health outcomes for millions of people under our care.
Benjamin K. Chu, MD, Group President for Southern California and Hawaii, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, Pasadena, CA
